Facilitating an Elusive Agreement

Challenge: There had been several unsuccessful initiatives to reach agreement on particular aspects of agricultural research. We were asked to design and facilitate an international conference involving participants from 22 countries. |
Actions
The conference, which was held over the course of a week, was opened by the host country's Deputy Government Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. Participants were informed that the Minister would visit the conference on the last half day to hear their presentation on the action plan they wanted him to support. Knowing of the Minister's imminent visit helped keep everyone focused on reaching a positive outcome.
Results
The result was an agreement drawn up based upon a plan for international collaboration that had eluded the parties in earlier initiatives. It was ratified by other bodies subsequently and successfully implemented.
